Hida Folk Village (Hida no Sato) Guide

Hida Folk Village: Journey Back in Time to Rural Japan Guide

Escape the modern world and step into a living museum at the Hida Folk Village (Hida no Sato), an open-air museum showcasing traditional farmhouses and buildings from the Hida region of the Japanese Alps. This meticulously preserved village offers a fascinating glimpse into the rural life and architectural heritage of Japan, allowing you to experience the charm and simplicity of a bygone era. Wander through thatched-roof houses, workshops, and storehouses, each telling a story of the people who once lived and worked there. The Hida Folk Village was established to preserve the unique architectural style and cultural traditions of the Hida region, which was threatened by modernization and development. The buildings were carefully relocated from their original locations throughout the region and reassembled in the village, creating an authentic representation of a traditional Hida farming community. Many of the buildings date back to the Edo period (1603-1868), offering a tangible connection to Japan's rich history. Explore the various buildings, each furnished with traditional tools, furniture, and artifacts, providing insights into the daily lives of the villagers. Watch demonstrations of traditional crafts, such as weaving, dyeing, and woodworking. Participate in hands-on activities, such as making your own sarubobo doll (a traditional Hida amulet). Enjoy seasonal events and festivals that celebrate the region's cultural heritage. Be sure to sample local delicacies at the village's restaurant, offering a taste of Hida's culinary traditions. Hida beef is a must-try, known for its marbling and tenderness. Also, try gohei mochi, grilled rice cakes with a sweet and savory sauce.
